The Adventures of a Confederate Hoosier

Ramblings of a simple man from Alabama trying to make it in Indianapolis

Girl, like doritos, that’s not cho’ cheese!

Yes, it has in fact been 157 years since I last posted here on the ol’ blog. I believe at that time the Germans had just marched into Paris, and President Grant sure had his hands full with a dandy of a scandal (non-history lovers are completely lost at this point). Right now, I’m at a Starbucks in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago. I’m up here with Holly as she interviews at the residency program at Northwestern.

So far, Holly has interviewed at IU, CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia), Vanderbilt, U. of Chicago, Northwestern, and still has interviews at U. of Cincinnati and OSU in Columbus. Does this mean that the Heaton’s are leaving Indianapolis? Well, the answer isĀ - maybe. Honestly, it all comes down to a city we both love, combined with a Pediatric Cardiology program that Holly truly loves. We love Indy, but we’d be lying not to admit that Vandy put the hardsell on both us. So, who knows, the Heaton’s may just end up back below the Mason-Dixon. Can’t say there would really be any complaint here?

“Andy, what about you?” Well, glad you asked. Yes, as some of you may know, I actually have currently a year of school left. Which means that the Holster and myself could have to endure a year apart. In reality, though, there is a chance that I could be done by next Fall. How, you ask? Because I’m insane and have constantly taken ridiculous credit loads each semester. This semester alone I’ve taken 20 credit hours between the JD and the MBA programs. That leaves me with just six credits to complete for the MBA program, so I’ll be done there by the summer. I could, then conceivably finish up my JD work by the Fall. That would make our possible separation a little more bearable.

This semester has been nuts, though, and I’m ready for a break. The credit load has put a strain on me mentally, physically, spiritually, and socialy. It hasn’t been peachy for Holly, either. It’s over in less than a week, though, and next semester I’m only scheduled to have 12 credit hours. Very nice.

In October, as scheduled, I did run the Chicago Marathon. I finished in approximately 4h and 42min. I was pretty happy with that time. Watching me run, though, seemed to inspire Hol. On Thanksgiving morning, Holly ran her first race ever, and she is signed up to run the Mini in May. I’m pretty dang proud of her for how far she’s come in her conditioning and how dedicated she has been to it. Mad props.

Random Thoughts:

  • I wish I could “pay-for-play” for pretty much anything. That would involve having the money to pay, though. Guess I’ll have to wait to be a Governor, so I can handle the “play” end of the deal.
  • I’m in the semi-finals of my fantasy football league. I’m two weeks away from a nice little pay day. Keep it up, Mr. Drew Brees.
  • Britney Spears – who saw her turning that ship around? Bravo, you’ve earned it.
  • Starbucks is doing this (red) campaign stuff. Aren’t they about two years late to the (red) party? Did they finally give in to the magnetic power that is Bono. Or did they realize that the economy is in the tank and they needed to do SOMETHING to try to get people to keep paying over $3 for a coffee-type drink. My non-fat, no-whip Gingersnap Lattee confirms their strategy either way, I suppose.
  • The Lions have a true shot at going winless. The Pistons have stunk since getting Iverson (which I predicted). The Tigers’ big winter acquisition so far has been C Laird from the Rangers. Siigghhh. At least the Red Wings are good again.

That’s all for now. Promise, mroe things will come. Holla.

PS – I just finished a spellcheck. In my original version, I pretty much spelled every city wrong int he second paragraph. Translation – I’m awesome.
